About Diagnostic Services of Manitoba
Diagnostic Services of Manitoba is the non-profit corporation responsible for all of Manitoba’s public laboratory services and for rural diagnostic imaging services.
A team of more than 1,500 dedicated lab, imaging and support staff provide a comprehensive range of diagnostic services at 77 facility points of access across the province.
Unified by a single vision and common goals, all sites work together as one organization to provide optimal service to both physicians and patients.

The Challenge
Diagnostic Services of Manitoba employs pathologists across five institutions in two cities, who, together with technical staff, function as a single provincial pathology department. Consultations between pathologists at different sites require sending the glass slides between locations and demonstration of findings to clinicians had to occur in the pathologist’s office. This made it difficult and time-consuming for DSM Pathologist Dr. Julianne Klein to liaise with colleagues at different sites. “I was looking for a mechanism to show findings of liver biopsies to our hepatologists, who are primarily located at another institution, in order to be able to have a real-time discussion to correlate the clinical findings and the morphology.”

The Solution
With BeamYourScreen it is possible to share real-time images of biopsies which are transmitted via a camera on the pathologist’s microscope, with other physicians who can view the images on a remote computer over the Internet. “When I tested BeamYourScreen, it proved to be the perfect solution, especially since it was so easy to use!” says Dr. Klein. “I use BeamYourScreen to discuss complex pathology cases with other pathologists and clinical colleagues. Findings pertaining to the gross preparation of cases can also be demonstrated for discussion with pathology technical assistants located at different sites.”

The Conclusion
Now it is easy and fast to share interesting cases and discuss clinical findings with distant colleagues. “I highly recommend BeamYourScreen. I believe it is a very useful tool in the practice of pathology, with the potential for significant impact on patient care.” Dr. Klein foresees even more potential. “BeamYourScreen can be used for informal consultations, to provide support for intra-operative pathologist consultations, for teaching and professional interest.”
